Week of August 28-September 1

Reading

This week, we will continue our district reading assessments.  One of our focuses this year is for our students to be able to use their independent reading book in class with daily assignments.  This week, we will practice doing this with our students.  All assignments will be completed in class.  We will also be working on our last two components for Wax Museum.  Please mark your calendar for Thursday, September 14th @ 6:30, this will be our Wax Museum evening.

We will have tri-boards for sell for Wax Museum for $2.50.  Please send cash to purchase one for your child.

If your child is new to our LC this year, they will have the option to participate with fewer assignments.  They will also have to complete a lot of the project at home.  If your child does want to participate, please email me as soon as possible.

Our first reading logs were given to the students on Friday, August 25th.  This is a shorter quarter so there will not be as many books required.  The Reading Log will be due on Friday, September 29th for a major grade.

Homework

Please have your child read every evening and make sure they record their books on the reading log.  Homework will be given on Mondays and due on Fridays.

Social Studies

Last week, we started practicing geography skills.  We discussed the 5 Themes of Geography and completed activities using our text books.  This week, will be discussing the Earth's rotation and revolution, the complex structure, and land forms. In addition, we will learn about the ring of fire and waters of the Earth.

Geography homework will be given on Tuesday and due on Thursday.

Writing

Last week, we started working on personal narratives.  We did brainstorming activities to narrow down our writing topics.  This week, we will move on to drafting our narratives.  Students will begin putting information about their topic in a Personal Graphic Organizer.  Students will also listen to mini lessons on how to create interesting leads and learn about transition words.

In grammar, we will continue to review the Parts of Speech.  Last week, we reviewed nouns and verbs.  This week, we will review complete subjects and predicates and compound sentences.
