Week of January 3-6

Language Arts

This week, we will begin our Literary Nonfiction unit of study.  The students will be completing many activities using picture books to understand the different types of books that fall under this genre.  We will also begin our Expository Writing unit.  This unit will be for several weeks.  We will start with explaining and demonstrating this type of writing which will lead us into producing an independent writing sample.

The students received their new Reading Logs on Tuesday, January 3rd and they will be due Friday, March 3rd.  This reading log will have an additional grade that will also be due on Friday, March 3rd.  If you look on the back of the Reading Log, there is a Book Report Choice Board.  The students will be required to complete 3 of the activities listed on 3 different books from their Reading Log.  The students will turn in both for two different major grades. Please stress with your child the importance of them completing both of these major grade requirements. We will remind the students throughout this quarter about their Reading Log and 3 projects.  Please set dates for them in completing their Reading Log and 3 projects.

We will not have homework this week, so please have your child begin on their reading log.

We are so excited for the second half of our school year and continuing to work with all of our students in making their 5th grade successful and preparing them for 6th grade. Welcome back and let's make a difference in 2017!!

Social Studies

On Tuesday, we will be learning about the key concepts of the Constitution.  We will talk about how The Preamble describes the purpose of government, which is to provide citizens with a fair, safe, and peaceful way of life.  On Thursday, we will read about and discuss when Washington took office and the first presidency.  Students will complete activities to re-enforce reading from the text and class discussion.  Students will also watch a video about George Washington's life.

There will be no homework this week.
