Week of October 3-7

Language Arts

10/7 READING LOGS ARE DUE(please make sure you sign it at the topic)
10/7  Test over weekly terms

We have been reminding our students to take home their 5 subject spirals to study for any quiz/test.  This is their "study guide".  We have the vocabulary, definitions, and examples for them to review in the spiral.  They need to be familiar with the words even though they use their spiral during the quiz/test. Yes, they are using their spiral during the quiz/test.  Please continue to support us by also reminding them to bring the spiral home daily.  This is a great tool for them to review daily.

We have completed our district assessments and have created our groups for reading.  We understand the transition from elementary reading to intermediate reading has taken some getting use to.  We have faith in all our students that they will adjust and get the hang of things.  Please encourage your child to come to us during Advisory for extra help.

We will introduce to the students what foreshadowing, flashback, suspense, and cliffhanger look like and the definitions for each.  We will work in our reading groups to complete anchor stations throughout the week to reinforce these terms.  On Friday, they will have a test over these terms, and they will have to be able to determine which goes with each term.  (They will be able to use their 5 subject spiral, but NEED to know the meanings of each term)

In writing, we will be editing and revising our Personal Narrative, so we can take our piece to publication.  The students will continue to practice their grammar skills in class this week before we start it for homework.

THIS WEEK WE HAVE HOMEWORK: We will give students homework on Monday and it will be due on Friday.  It is a short Historical passage and two Word Ladders.  Please make sure your child is still reading every evening for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Great questions to ask your child about their reading: What is the rising action in your story? What is the climax in your story? What is the conflict in your story? What type of conflict is it? What is the resolution in your story? Where does the story take place?

Social Studies

Last week, we finished our unit on Exploration.  There will be a test over exploration on Tues, October 4th. Study guides for the test were given to the students on Tuesday, September 27th.  On Thursday, there will be a quiz over the first 25 states and capitals.  The states and capitals are listed in the planner alphabetically.  The quiz will be over Alabama-Missouri. Please make sure your child is preparing for these tests.

This week, we will be learning about the early colonies- Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth.  We will also be learning about the thirteen colony regions- New England, Middle, and Southern colonies.  Students will be doing various activities detailing the success of the early colonies; and detailing the colony regions, such as, the reasons various colonies were founded, geography, economy, and government.

There will be no geography homework this week.  Students should be preparing for their quiz on Thursday.
